Karyn and Lin went to Magnet Mafia’s shindig last night and had a blast.  AIGA Colorado held Craftwork, an event for designers to do “off the clock” creative projects in a variety of diverse venues with artists. This event was about making magnets with Denver’s street art crew The Magnet Mafia. At various work stations they learned to wheat paste, use type stencils, paint, layer art and create a 1 foot square magnet.

We learned something today. Golden Paint Company brought out the big guns with their new line of acrylic paint called “OPEN.” As the name states Golden’s new line stays wet or “open” for a longer period of time in an attempt to bridge the gap between regular acrylic and oil paint of old. Early this morning, our Denver store staff got to get dirty and test out this new paint with the assistance of a very knowledgeable sales manager from Golden. No surprise it does stay wet longer, it even feels different. Not as tacky as acrylic and not as slippery as oil. The drying time is based on the thickness of your application, thin layers are capable of staying wet for up to half an hour, and thicker applications could take up to weeks to dry. OPEN acrylics have a remarkable relaxed working time to allow you to blend, soften, shade and glaze. Plein air painters should be doing back flips especially in this dry Colorado weather. Rumor has it that you can also use OPEN for monoprinting and silkscreening.

This line of paint comes with mediums engineered to have the same working time as the OPEN colors, can be used with your regular acrylic to slow that drying time. This is the future of paint my friends. Also on the rosters are Golden’s new digital grounds, enabling you to print onto porous and nonporous surfaces with amazing clarity. Choose your surface and put those years of learning Photoshop to use. I cannot begin to tell you how many artists have asked for a product like this. Golden also made new Gel Topcoats with UVLS in gloss and semi-gloss that work well on top of the digital grounds. These Gel Topcoats can also be used on top of regular paint to help stabilize fugitive pigments, and on top of any pigment based inks.

HAPPENED> Justin Beard at the 11th Ave Gallery last Friday was especially brilliant. Justin made 150 laptop computers out of found wood, paper and duct tape, all to fund one real laptop. Justin called it “the Gepetto effect.” “Hoping to get the real version of what we create.” We are all proud we have a mind like Justin Beard roaming our streets.
